I've decided to let the roaddeaths.net / roaddeaths.ie project go. I've just been to busy to keep the site up to date. Anyone interested?

A collaborative google maps version of RoadDeaths.ie is more
than welcome to a (second) home on OurMaps.ie. IMHO it will be much
easier for a large group of collaborators to keep alive than an
individual or small group.
I've set it to open collaboration btw,.. thoughts? Is it too
'sensitive' a map to be set to open? I'll wait for feedback before
announcing it on OurMaps.ie
It would be ideal to have a collaborator or two for each
province (if not county) so if people could help spread the word
that would be great.
@willknot AFAIK Google
Earth now supports "time maps" via KML.... but I haven't really
explored it. Will King of OpenGeo.net, who was a massive help in
getting the wifi maps up and going, is coming to 3Dcamp in Limerick
and I'll ask him if he could show us how to do this. Would make for
a nice workshop IMHO.
@eirepreneur That's
excellent, man those maps still makes me shudder, considering I
started mid way through '06 and stopped mid way through '07, there
would be a lot more marks on them.
I think open collaboration is good because I often found it
difficult to pin down the location and had to enlist the help of
visitors to the site.
The best way to get the information is to email the Garda Press
Release Office and ask to be included on their mailing list.
Contributors with local knowledge can use the information in the
press release to put the info on the map.
Good idea @johnnypez,
I'll do that now. I might as well go ahead and add it to OurMaps.ie
too I suppose. BTW are you keeping the existing domains live?
@eirepreneur I think
I'm going to let roaddeaths.net slide as Joe Drumgoole kindly
donated Roaddeaths.ie back in 2006 and has been keeping that domain
alive til now. I could ask him to redirect it to OurMaps.ie?
Hey Johnny - can't find your email on your blog. Can you drop me
a mail? robin@bytesurgery.com just want
to touch base over some roaddeaths.ie bits ;-)
Jesus, it's not until you're on the Gardai's mailing list that
it really hits home - two fatality reports already :( I really need
local help one though - can anyone pinpoint Corngrass, Conna,
Mallow, Co. Cork?
Actually I wonder what's the best way to solicit local
knowledge? Are there Twitterers for every county in Ireland at this
stage? Would people follow to a sombre @roaddeaths account?
@eirepreneur Yeah
it's pretty depressing when you get those mails every day for over
a year. I found maporama.com to be a good starting point if you
can't solicit local knowledge.
I know roaddeaths stream may be sombre but it would quickly show
people how often people die. You saw yourself today when those
emails start arriving.
I was wondering if you can slice and dice the data/analyse?
Deaths at noon vs 4am. deaths at an equal time lapse between a
certain point (did changes to road do anything).
Well the two Garda Press Office emails I've received thus far do
give times Will so some basic analysis will be possible for sure.
But I don't think I'll be getting much information about road
changes or conditions though.
BTW the @roaddeaths
account has now been setup on Twitter and I'm hoping it will get a
volunteer follower per county to help pinpoint local accidents.
I've included the time in each description in the KML files,
those times are the time of the incident as reported by the Gardai.
So it should be possible to break them down.
I used a time window of 4 days and slowed the animation right
down. Watch how the days leading up to Paddy's weekend are
relatively quiet and then the yellow tags splatter (sorry, but
that's the only word for it) the page around the 17th. Very
sad.

@eirepreneur, If anyone wants to port that data over that's fine with me.
I'd love to see the Garda press release office take over the site though. I've had no luck getting any reponse on that though.

@johnnypez can you point me to or provide a KML file for the existing data? Or can you otherwise export it?

@eirepreneur, I'll look up the kml standard and see if I can generate one.

@eirepreneur I've generated some kml data from what I've got in Wordpress at the moment. You want to give it a try? http://www.roaddeaths.net/kml.php?do=year&year=2006 http://www.roaddeaths.net/kml.php?do=yea...

In map form, are there any concentrations or is it all spread evenly? Is it possible to make "time maps" in order to leave concentrations stand out?

Thanks @johnnypez, I've imported those two KMLs to two new Google MyMaps for archival -
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112855554048460880778.00044bef2119f5360359a&ll=53.375,-8.165&spn=5.336428,12.128906&z=6 http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&h...
And I've started a new collaborative map for 2008 -

@willknott Have you seen the maps that are up there? There definitely are roads and areas that show a high concentration of incidents. http://www.roaddeaths.ie/map.php?do=year...

Dammit, Jaiku broke the link. The collaboration URL for the 2008 map is - http://tinyurl.com/5bd5ew

If you can John, please. Or perhaps directly to - http://ourmaps.wordpress.com/road-deaths...
Any feedback/correction/suggestions greatly appreciated.

@eirepreneur I've emailed Joe and asked him if he would kindly set up a redirect to that url.

@WillKnott Will King of OpenGeo.net massaged the 2007 data to produce this timestamped KML - http://eirepreneur.blogs.com/roaddeaths2...
